Unit 1 Summary (Chapters 1-4)

Chapter 1, You the writer

  1. You write to.. share your experiences with others, to persuade people, to inform and to enjoy, it enables you to express your thoughts.
  2. You write.. memories, texting friends, sending e-mails, doing list of things, writing speech or works for school.
  3. You find ideas by..observing, by reading, watching and thinking.
  4. Keep track of ideas:  1. Start and idea 2. Keep a personal journal 3. Maintain a learning log 4. Free write.
  5. To get started.. get comfortable, have your materials ready, spend time wisely.
  6. To work with others.. you make a brainstorming, cooperative writing, peer feedback and use technology.
  7. You keep your work finished.. in a portfolio or in a reader's journal.
Chapter 2,Types of writing 
  1. Genres and Forms: Genres are types or categories of writing. Forms are subcategories of genres. Depending on the topic has to entertain, to describe an emotion or to persuade someone. 
  2. Nonfiction Narration: are any kind of literary text that tells a story about real people. It can be.. Personal narratives, biographical narratives, blogs, diary, reflective essays etc.
  3. Fiction Narration: Texts that tells a story about imagined people like realistic fiction, fantasy stories, historical fiction, mystery stories, myths, legends etc.
  4. Poetry and description: Express ideas and feelings about real or imagined people. We can find ballad, free verse, prose poem, sonnet, haiku etc. 
  5. Exposition: communicate ideas and information. Like analytical essays, compare and contrast essay, cause and effect essay, problem-solution essay. pro-con essay, newspaper etc.
  6. Persuasion: Writing aims to influece the actions of a specific audience like persuasive speeches, editorials, argumentative essays, reviews etc
  7. Responses to literature: analyze an author's work
  8. Research writing
  9. Worplace Writing: is writing done on the job, like business letters, memos, e-mails, etc.
  10. Writing for Media: Scripts, blogs and advertisements.
Chapter 3, The Writing Process

Writing Traits
  • Rubrics: allows you to score your writing on a scale for each trait whichhas specific qualities.
  • Traits:

  1. Ideas: How interesting are the ideas.
  2. Organitation: How logically is, how much sense it has.
  3. Voice: How authentic is your voice.
  4. Word choice: how precise and vivid are the words you use.
  5. Sentence Fluency: How strong and varied is the rhythm of the sentences.
  6. Conventions: How correct is your punctuation.

  • Writing Process: Is complex process of five steps:


Chapter 4 Sentences, Paragrapshs, and Compositions

Strong sentences and paragraphs help to construct effective composition.

Writing Strong Sentences: 
To write strong paragraphs, you need strong sentences, to get it you'll need:
  1. Combine Sentences: Putting information from one sentence into another.
  2. Use Compound Elements: Form compound subjects, verbs, etc.
  3. Form Compund Sentences: Combine sentences.
  4. Use Subordination: Combine to related sentences.
Writing Strong Paragraphs:
  1. Express Your Main Idea: Summarizes the main idea.
  2. Write Effective Supporting Sentences: Support the paragraph's main idea.
  3. Include a Variety of Sentence Lengths, Structures , and Beginnings: Includes Sentences of different lengths, types, and beginnings.
Composing Your Piece:
 The parts of the composition: Introduction, body, and conclution.

Rhetorical and Literary Devices:
Use the rhetorical devices to strengthen the power of their style.
