Narrative Nonfiction: Memoir

An effective piece of narrative nonfiction has these characteristics:

  1. An engaging true story.
  2. A well-developed conflict.
  3. A well-developed resolution.
  4. Literary strategies and devices.
  5. A specific mood.
  6. A unique tone.
  7. Sensory details.
  8. A clear theme.
  9. Effective sentence structure.
  10. Personal experiences.

Other forms of Narrative Nonfiction
  • Autobiographical narratives: Are stories written in the first person about writer's own life.
  • Biographical narratives: Are written in the third person about the life of someone other.
  • Blogs: Are online forums in wich writers share autobiographical narratives, reflections, opinions, and other types of comments.
  • Diary entries: Are intended only for the writer, unless the writer decides to share them.
  • Narrative essays: Illustrate a theme with one or more biographical or autobiographical narratives.
  • Reflective essays: Tell about events that the writer expetienced, witnessed, or heard about.
